Traditional consumers of foundry coke are undergoing significant transformation, transitioning towards sustainability by employing environmentally responsible technologies and moving towards reducing their carbon footprint.

The main objective of the project is to research and design biobriquettes that can replace, at least partially, foundry coke. Biobriquettes are posited as an attractive alternative renewable source of carbon, which will significantly reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions.

The biobriquettes will incorporate products of biogenic origin (lignocellulosic waste), recovered carbonaceous waste (waste derived from industrial production), as well as pyrolysis oils from waste valorization.

One of the major challenges in biobriquette production is overcoming technical difficulties in using these components within the cupola or reactor (reactivity, mechanical strength, low density, low energy, etc.), in addition to achieving product definitions that simultaneously include high degrees of efficiency and profitability with low environmental footprint.

In this regard, the specific objectives of the project are aimed at researching two new production lines:

Research, design, characterization, and optimization of Biobriquettes for use in Foundries.

Research, design, characterization, and optimization of Biobriquettes for use in chemical reactors.
